Hello Booklovers!!!

Today my post is going to be a special one. This would be my first ever review, of an audio book.

Let’s head into the review.

Becoming by Michelle Obama

Synopsis

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same.

My Review

“For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end.”
Michelle Obama, Becoming

As I mentioned before, this is my very first audio book. Normally I find audio books very hard to grasp because of the voice of the narrator. But Becoming is exceptional. Since the book is being narrated by Michelle by herself, it was like having a friendly chat with her. After reading the book I felt that, I have been knowing this wonderful woman for a long time.

Special characteristics of this audio book;

  • It was really great to listen to the story from the voice of Michelle herself.
  • The book is divided into three parts as Becoming me, Becoming us and Becoming more, which is a great way to share about her life to the reader with out any confusions.

It can be described as the story of Michelle Robinson becoming Michelle Obama. Michelle is a strong, humble and dedicated woman. From the very beginning we see that, she fights for what she thinks is, correct.

Born and raised in the south side of Chicago, she does not come from a wealthy family, but her family is supporting and loving, where I feel that it helped her to become who she is today. Being a straight A student, she graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School. After meeting Barack Obama her life starts to change. It is amazing to hear it from her own  voice. After their marriage Michelle becomes a working wife, where she is supported by a strong man, Barack Obama. I loved the part where they met for the first time and I was laughing to hear the way, Barack proposed to her.

Their two girls were born, she becomes a working mom. I simply loved how she cared for her family. Her husband running for the Presidential Candidacy, changes their lives into a different path. But her strong will helps Barack to face the upcoming challenges, and Michelle steps down from a bright career to take care of the family.

After Barack Obama being elected as the 44th President of United States, Michelle becomes the first African-American First Lady of the United States.

The part of the story after they moved to the white House, is what I most enjoyed listening to. The Obama family was so humble and the staff of the White House loved them. Michelle never forgot her humble beginning and treated their staff as family. Together Mr. & Mrs. Obama served the country and Michelle was the pillar of strength to Barack and their lovely daughters. They had ups and downs in their family, but together they reached the pinnacle of the world.

I adore this strong, ambitious and courages woman. My only hope is that I will be able to meet her one day!  (Missing them already, even though I am not from the USA!!! I just adore the Obama family!)

Synopsis

Arizona, December 1943. After surviving perilous six-month journeys to 1889 and 1918, the Carsons, five siblings from the present day, seek a respite in their home state. While Adam and Greg settle down with their Progressive Era brides, Natalie and Caitlin start romances with wartime aviators and Cody befriends a Japanese family in an internment camp. The time travelers regroup, bury some ghosts, and continue their search for their missing parents. Then old problems return, new ones emerge, and a peaceful hiatus becomes a race for survival. In INDIAN PAINTBRUSH, the sequel to RIVER RISING and THE MEMORY TREE, several young adults find love and adventure as they navigate the home front during the height of World War II. (from Goodreads)

My Review

I have always enjoyed the books by John Heldt. They are so amazingly written. I did not hesitate at all, to accept Indian Paintbrush, to be reviewed.

The story is all about the five Carson siblings traveling through time in search of their parents. This time they are in the setting of the World War II. As mentioned in the synopsis, older problems return and new problems are created and it wonderful to see how they stand up as a united family to face them.

When you start reading the book, you just won’t feel to keep the book away. You want to know what will happen next. It is just like, if you keep the book aside, you will miss what will happen next. (I know, I sound weird). Here the most important thing is the writing style of the author. He has crafted the story in such away, that you feel you are a part of this story too. With every page that you turn, you feel that you being carried away by the story. The characters are created so naturally, they are well-connected with the earlier books. Historical facts are another way that the author has been able to keep the attraction of the reader.

Overall it is a well written book, clear and easy to understand. There is never a dull moment and that makes hard for the reader to put the book down. Definitely  looking forward to reading the next book of this sequel. Filled with suspense, romance and tragedy, I would recommend this book to all of you.

100 Ways to Live as an Optimist in a Pessimistic World by Katherine Swarts – Book Review

Hello Booklovers!!!

On this lovely Sunday, I am bringing you another book review. First I must thank the author, Kristine Swarts for sending me an eARC copy of the book, in exchange for an honest review.

It was such a wonderful read that would definitely give so many positive aspects, in to your life. This is my review;

Synopsis

Tired of hearing complaints and grumbling and expect-the-worst comments on all sides? Tired of hearing them from yourself? Want to live happier and healthier, regularly expecting and seeing good in life? 100 Ways to Live as an Optimist in a Pessimistic World explains how to change your attitude—and influence your world in the optimistic direction—by practicing little life hacks that are simple and even fun.

My Review

The book is all about being positive in a world where everything falls off to be negative. From the moment you wake up in the morning, until the time you head in to bed at night, you go through so much. Your emotions are like roller-coaster. At one point you are happy and at the other you are all sad and upset and ready to break-down.

Complaining constantly has become a part of our lives. We complaint almost about every thing. We complaint for waking up late, for having traffic on the road, for not having enough sugar in your coffee, for the pair of shoes that you can’t afford to buy in the shoe shop etc. We human beings, have got so used to it that we don’t seriously feel how much bad impact that it could bring in to our lives.

If we wake up a bit more early, and most of all we should be considering our selves as completely privileged to open our eyes in the morning, considering that some people, just die in their sleep. We should thank God for giving us another day to live. Therefore we have to make the most of it.

As I mentioned earlier, we should be grateful for everything that we have, and make the most of it. With so many things going around us, and so many people and relationships tangled in our lives, it is rather difficult to be optimistic. We are all living in this competitive world and we forget to concentrate on all the minor details and things happening around us. The only thing that matters the most is all the complaints and problems that we face. By doing this, we forget to focus on simple things in life.

This book is ideal for all of us, no matter in which age you are. It gives you deeper insight of our lives and focuses on so many tiny details, that most of the time we tend to ignore. After reading the book, I felt that how happy we could be, when we focus on these minor aspects of life. Here are 10 things (out of 100) that I found rather interesting;

  1. Make a list of things you’re grateful for.
  2. Take time to notice tiny beauties.
  3. Make a thirty-day vow, to write down ten blessings for every time you complain.
  4. Set a goal of getting a smile from everyone you talk today.
  5. Spread positive energy.
  6. Don’t eat breakfast, or even drink coffee, while driving. Make time to concentrate on savoring your food.
  7. Do something else creative.
  8. Read a biography of the person you most admire, highlighting every time they had to get up and try again.
  9. Keep working toward your dreams no matter what.
  10. Make up your mind that you will stay positive. Just saying it works wonders.

These are just random 10 facts that I found rather fascinating, remember there are another 90 more amazing things that you can learn from this book. I feel that it is a must read for every one. This amazing self-help book would definitely help you to be optimistic in this pessimistic world
