The seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid – Book Review

Hello Booklovers!!!

If you have been with my blog for sometime, you might already remember that I so badly wanted to read this book. Finally I was able to listen to the wonderful audio version of the book, which was amazing. Here is my review.

Synopsis

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ’80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means–and what it costs–to face the truth.

My Review

I was mesmerized by the story. It took me several days to complete the book. I am still a bit confused, on how to gather my thoughts to write a review about the story. We meet the protagonist  Evelyn Hugo, where she is ready to share her luxurious and scandalous life, her forbidden love to an unknown magazine reporter, Monique Grant.

It is unbelievable how Evelyn started her career as an actress and her incredible sacrifices. I was genuinely astonished about her strong character, courage and will-power. It takes plenteous courage, for a woman to be as strong as she is.

The story relates to us about her earlier life, all about her seven husbands and her daughter. Nonetheless, it was not much accepted for one woman to love another woman, she takes the shot in the dark of loving Celia St. James.

The story touched a deeper place in my heart, because I felt for all the characters in the story. It was a wonderful plot, with carefully created characters, full of drama and revelations.

The only predicament that bothered me was, sometimes Evelyn was in extremes. That is the only reason I gave the book  one star less rating. Nevertheless, it was an amazing story about a strong woman and her hard life.

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine by Gail Honeyman – Book Review

Hello Booklovers!!!

Synopsis

No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

My Review

“When the silence and the loneliness press down and around me, crushing me, carving through me like ice, I need to speak aloud sometimes, if only for proof of life.”

Eleanor Oliphant is 30 years old, working as a financial assistant to a company. She lives a lonely life, where she does not have any social interactions at all. But she doesn’t worry.  She has been working in this company since the day she left university. Every Wednesday she speaks to her mummy over the phone, and drinks Vodka during the weekend. She seems perfectly ok.

Eleanor meets Raymond who works in the same company, in the IT department. To Eleanor, he seems to be the most unhygienic person that exists in the world. As if by destiny, they become very good friends, after they helped an almost dying person on the street, by taking him to the hospital. This incident becomes the first turning point in her life. Eleanor and Raymond’s friendship started to bloom after this incident, which makes her understand that she is not at all ok, even though she thought so.

I found Eleanor as a lonely person, who lives her own life, does not care about others opinions and pays attention to very minor details. I was listening to the audio book, and every bit of it was wonderful. I felt all the emotions that Eleanor went through in her life. She has gone through so much.

It is amazing to see how Raymond was able to change the life of Eleanor, in a completely positive manner. He brings the best out of her and always expects the best for her. I loved both the characters, Eleanor and Raymond, which brings light to the whole story.

The story is all about love, caring, family, true friends. It was emotional. Sometimes it made me cry and also, laugh. The narrator of the audio book, Cathleen McCarron, has done a marvellouse job. Her voice brings life to the characters and the story.

In the end, what I felt was, there can be so many Eleanors’ in our society. But do we pay attention to them? No right? True friendship and understanding can change another persons life, just like Eleanor’s. The book carries the weight of this real life situation. What an amazing, heart-touching and emotional story!!!

It is indeed a book that should be read by everyone. Great work by the author, Gail Honeyman.

“These days, loneliness is the new cancer—a shameful, embarrassing thing, brought upon yourself in some obscure way. A fearful, incurable thing, so horrifying that you dare not mention it; other people don’t want to hear the word spoken aloud for fear that they might too be afflicted, or that it might tempt fate into visiting a similar horror upon them.”

Synopsis

When Sheriff Yolanda Demetriou receives boxes of notebooks, she has no idea of the horrors that lie ahead. Will she be able to piece together the information and locate the house where childhood dreams become nightmares? Or will she be too late to save an abducted girl?

In this dark psychological thriller, Yolanda and her team embark on a hunt for a monster, following maddeningly sparse clues in a race to solve a heartless crime.

My Review

Two young boys find boxes full of notebooks and brings them up to the sheriff, Yolanda Demetriou , where she calls up her team for investigation. Yolanda has no idea where this will lead to or who is behind this. She later learns that a young girl has been abducted and held hidden by a man called Mr. Whiskers. With no proper names or locations and very little information, Yolanda begins her investigation with the help of FBI to find the missing girl. since they believed she is still alive.

The story was such a thriller and most importantly a short read. It just took me one whole day (which is today :)) to complete it. The story gripped me from the beginning and I was really interested to know, what will happen next. When I started reading, I did not know what to expect. I must say, that highly doubted whether, Yolanda will be able to save this girl. But, she finally she did.

It was wonderfully written and fantastic. The authors writing ability and the story line keeps the reader hooked to the story. There was this strange eeriness in the story which becomes, the wow factor of the whole story.

I enjoyed the way the story was written. In between each chapter, there was an extraction from a page from one of the notebooks the little girl has written. The reader feels great wave of emotions towards the little girl. As I mentioned earlier, I was excited and enthralled from the first page till the last.

I would highly recommend this book to all the book lovers, who are looking for a light but dark read.
