How to get out of a Reading Rut – Guest Post by India McLeod Kay

Hello All!!!

Welcome to another beautiful Tuesday, and today I have a special guest for you, who has accepted my kind invitation to write a guest post for my blog.

Let’s be realistic! We have all face the reading rut. So, here are India’s top 5 tips to get over the reading rut. Do not forget to visit her blog, Belles-Letters Book Reviews

We’ve all been there: The Reading Rut. Whether you’re an avid reader with a constant lust for books or a newbie reader, attempting to get into the swing of things, there’s always a time when you just. Don’t. Want. To. Read. Having recently just climbed out of this pit of sadness myself, I thought I’d let my fellow bloggers in on my top 5 tips for getting out of this slump and back into the wonderful world of books.

I know myself that there are certain places where I just love to read and am more likely to lose myself in the book without too many distractions. The first would be a coffee shop, where I can sink into my comfy seat, sip my favourite iced latte and know no one will disturb me. My other favourite place to read would be in bed but with certain caveats: candles burning, fairy lights on and cup of tea to hand. You’re much more likely to enjoy reading if you’re in an environment that you like to read in, so get yourself to your nearest coffee shop/park/bedroom/wherever you like to read and give it a go!

One Chapter A Night
Looking at an entire novel, with its plethora of pages can be very daunting if you’re just not feeling the whole reading vibe. Therefore, when I’m trying to get back into reading, I start myself off with the goal of reading one chapter a night. It may seem counterproductive to set yourself goals for something you’re supposed to enjoy as it makes it seem like work, but this is only to get yourself going. Once I start reading again, it soon becomes multiple chapters a night and then turns into reading all day long.

Judge a Book by its Cover
Yes, I said it. Blasphemy. Seriously though, if I’m trying to get back into reading, having a pretty book on my bedside table really does entice me to read it.

Choose Easy Over Classic
Personally, if I’m trying to make reading enjoyable again, choosing a classic with its tiny font and incomprehensible vocabulary isn’t going to do it for me. The best thing I can do is start with a good ol’ chick flick so that I can read it fast and easily, getting lost in the characters and plot over the writing itself.

Watch Some Booktube
This may sound like a weird one but, for me, listening to someone talk about reading and watching them hold the book in their hand, really motivates me to read. I want to get just as passionate about a book as they are and have my own discussions about what I liked or didn’t like about it. Before I discovered Booktube, a weird thing that would work for me was watching films or tv shows about reading and studying. For example, watching Hermione get stuck into her homework in Harry Potter made me crave a good book sesh. I know. It’s weird. But hey! Whatever works for ya!

So there you have it, my top 5 tips for getting out of a reading rut! Do any of these work for you? Do you have some alternative tips to share?

Line-SeparatorThat is all for today folks, and I hope you enjoyed todays guest post.

Until next time,

Dark Comedy Fantasy Novella – Guest Post by Nicky Blue

Hello All,

Welcome to a wonderful Wednesday and I am so happy to say, author Nicky Blue is here today in my blog with a wonderful post about his Fantasy Comedy, Escape from Samsara.

Without further ado, let’s head in to his wonderful post.

For me it’s vital to dedicate time to developing creativity in my life, without this my writing becomes quite dry. Meditation is a big part of this process, I have been practising for around 20 years. I go on meditation retreats every year and find it a great way to deepen what’s going on for me. I find 20 minutes in the morning a great way to build calm and spaciousness. Without wanting to sound like a massive hippy, I also try to tap into the unconscious as much as possible. The unconscious is always working in the background. Studies in the fields of both neuroscience and psychology are refining and illuminating how this process works but I find just by asking myself a question before going to sleep i.e. How will my protagonist get out of this corner? I often wake up with the answer. I think it was Thomas Edison that said ‘Never go to sleep without a request to your subconscious.’ This seems to work well for me.
With my fist novella Escape From Samsara. (Prophecy Allocation Book 1) The idea began with a gardener I knew, who was always complaining about something, the rain, the sun you name it. I had the sense it would be great fun to take him on a cosmic adventure. I love the interplay between the every day and the magical. I have just completed book two in this series which is called ‘Hot Love Inferno’ and it sees the main character Barry Harris as a younger man engaging in a most dangerous adventure, that of falling in Love. You can get Escape From Samsara for free at my website www.nickyblue/freebie

Book Blurb

A fatal mistake catapults Barry Harris into the adventure of a lifetime. With talking hedges, samurai ghosts, meddling psychotherapists, and an inexplicably non-linear time pattern conspiring against him, Barry must do battle to save his hide, unleash the ninja within, and rescue his father from an ancient army, a dark sorcerer and a raging inferno.

Hi, I’m Nicky, I am from Brighton in England. I grew up fascinated by books like Roald Dahl’s Tales of the Unexpected and t.v. shows like The Twilight Zone. For years I played and wrote songs in an alternative rock band before going back to university and studying English Literature and Philosophy. I now have a passion for writing fantasy and dark comedy fiction. I love stories that dig beneath the surface of everyday life and play in the shadow worlds that we all have.
I hope you enjoyed the guest post for today. A very big thank you to Nicky Blue for sending me the wonderful post and I am very much looking forward to reading his book. The review will be up within the next coming months.
Until next post,
