The Bad Break by Jill Orr – Book Review

Hello All!!!

It is a lovely, warm and sunny Saturday here in Sri Lanka. And I have nothing specially to do but to sit back and relax. The best way to spend my day is to enjoy a wonderful Mystery book.

I would like to thank the author, lovely Jill Orr for sending me the eARC of the book in exchange for an honest review. Normally I am not that person who reads many mystery books. But trust me once I started this one, I could not put it down. I was disparately wanting to know, what will happen next. Sorry, I talk too much!!!

The book is the second one in a series and it is The Bad Break by Jill Orr.

Riley’s back—and boy, is she busy!

Riley Ellison has taken a great leap of faith by giving up her comfortable job at the Tuttle Corner library for the exciting world of print journalism. Except that so far it hasn’t been very exciting. All that changes when Riley’s former co-worker Tabitha finds her soon-to-be father-in-law dead on the floor of his office, and Riley is asked to write his obituary. And when they discover Tabitha’s fiancé’s knife sticking out of his father’s chest, Riley finds herself with a murder investigation to cover as well.

With Holman out on leave and mounting pressure from her boss, the mayor, and a bridezilla facing the possibility of a conjugal visit honeymoon, Riley is desperate to prove she can handle the increasing demands of her new job. Despite warnings from her new boyfriend Jay, Riley blurs the line between reporter and investigator. Will Riley’s rookie mistakes lead to more than just her byline ending up on the obituary page? (from Goodreads)

My Review

As I mentioned earlier, I am not much into the Mystery genre. But I fell in love with this book. The main female character or we can simply call her the heroin of the story, Riley is the reason behind it. Here are some interesting things that I found bout the book;

  1. Riley, the super woman of the story is wonderful. I love her for who she is and her undying efforts and hard work towards achieving her goal.
  2. The supporting characters are pretty much behind the success of the story.
  3. The rural community, Tuttle County makes a perfect atmosphere for the story and I fell in love with the place.
  4. I loved the bond between Riley and her parents as well as her dead Grandfather. (This is completely similar to my own situation and she spoke to my heart there)
  5. The encouragement and trust that Holman has on her is amazing.
  6. Honestly I did not like Riley’s boyfriend Jay at first, but at the latter part I felt that he was OK.
  7. The plot was amazingly created and all the characters were connected to the scene in one way or the other.
  8. The end was the best part, where all the pieces of the puzzle fall in to place and the mysteries are being solved.
  9. The humor is created through the emails sent by Riley, through out the story, with her heart spoken out to Jenna – the personal success concierge.
  10. It has a uniqueness of its own in the Mystery genre.

These are the reasons behind my saying that it is indeed an amazing mystery story. Now I really want to read the 1st Book of the series.

Solis Invicti: Book I
By Josie Jaffrey

A deadly infection threatens to wipe out humanity. The
only people who can stem its advance are the Silver, a
vampiric race who offer a simple exchange: protection in return for blood and subservience. It’s not a deal that Emmy’s willing to make, but as her world burns around her she finds herself in the arms of the enemy and the line between oppressor and saviour begins to blur.
After an attack by the infected, Emmy is rescued by the handsome Drew who introduces her to the world of the Silver. Desperate to escape subjugation and confused by her
attraction to him, she gathers what remains of her surrogate family and plans to make a break for freedom.
But despite her efforts to resist, she is drawn further into the intrigues of the mysterious Silver through the agency of their ruler, the Primus: Solomon. Emmy refuses to submit
to the cold and detached Primus and an attempt on her life makes it clear that he is unable to protect her from the political machinations of his race.
As the connection between them deepens she must choose between her desire and her will to rebel, but can she trust his intentions when everyone is after her blood?

Tagline: If the price of safety is slavery, would you bargain your life?

Can dreams come true? by Krysten Lindsay – Book Review

Hello All!!!

Welcome to another Thursday! I thought of doing a book review, without waiting till  Sunday.

I would like to thank the author, Krysten Lindsay for sending me the ARC of the book, in exchange for an honest review.

Contemporary YA fiction

Cecily has always had a huge crush on singer Andrew Holiday and she wants to be an actress, so she tags along when her friend auditions for his new video. However, the director isn’t looking for an actress, but rather the girl next door—and so is Andrew. Cecily gets a part in the video and all of Andrew’s attention on the set. Her friend begins to see red and Cecily’s boyfriend is seeing green—as in major jealousy. A misunderstanding leaves Cecily and her boyfriend on the outs and Andrew hopes to pick up the pieces as he’s looking for someone more stable in his life than the models he’s dated. Soon Cecily begins to realize Andrew understands her more than her small-town boyfriend—but can her perfect love match really be her favorite rock star?

My Review

Cecili – I simply loved Cecili for the way she becomes herself, no matter what happens. When Harlow and Kumi comes on to the set with perfect complexions and hair, Cecili walks in with nothing but messy hair and puffy eyes. I love her character and her personality. She is a simple girl with less expectations.

Andrew A dream star and a dream boyfriend that every girl wishes for. I loved his character for being so simple, honest, caring, loving and most of all for being understanding.

Zach – I actually felt from the beginning that Zach was not the person for Cecili. He does talk a lot about other girls and praises them but not his girlfriend. I think that comparing himself with Andrew he lacks many qualities that a girl expects from a guy.

Cecili’s Parents : Me being an Asian, Cecili’s parents reminds me of my own parents who are loving and protective. They love each other a couple and takes good care of their daughter.

Tana : The spoilt ex-girlfriend of Zach, who tries to come between people and who does not bother other people’s feelings.

Harlow : The rich spoilt girl who acts as a know-it-all. Well crafted character because I can’t stop hating her 🙂

Ali and Lila : Two best friends of Cecili. They care or her sticks with her in every situation.

The story

As you already know, the story is about a girl called Cecili, who has a huge crush on her dream singer, Andrew Holiday. Cecili gets the opportunity to do a role in Andrew’s newest music video. Zach, her boyfriend does not like the whole idea since he knows how much Cecili likes Andrew. Things change and Ceili realizes that Andrew can understand her way better than, Zach her boyfriend.

It was a cute love story and in the end I was super excited to know more about Cecili and Andrew. In fact it was a simple story that I see no complicated situations and that it can happen to us as well.

I just loved the story and the love that built between Andrew and Cecili. I was hooked to the book from the start to the end. It is a super cute and simple story I read after some time.
