The seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid – Book Review

Hello Booklovers!!!

If you have been with my blog for sometime, you might already remember that I so badly wanted to read this book. Finally I was able to listen to the wonderful audio version of the book, which was amazing. Here is my review.

Synopsis

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ’80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means–and what it costs–to face the truth.

My Review

I was mesmerized by the story. It took me several days to complete the book. I am still a bit confused, on how to gather my thoughts to write a review about the story. We meet the protagonist  Evelyn Hugo, where she is ready to share her luxurious and scandalous life, her forbidden love to an unknown magazine reporter, Monique Grant.

It is unbelievable how Evelyn started her career as an actress and her incredible sacrifices. I was genuinely astonished about her strong character, courage and will-power. It takes plenteous courage, for a woman to be as strong as she is.

The story relates to us about her earlier life, all about her seven husbands and her daughter. Nonetheless, it was not much accepted for one woman to love another woman, she takes the shot in the dark of loving Celia St. James.

The story touched a deeper place in my heart, because I felt for all the characters in the story. It was a wonderful plot, with carefully created characters, full of drama and revelations.

The only predicament that bothered me was, sometimes Evelyn was in extremes. That is the only reason I gave the book  one star less rating. Nevertheless, it was an amazing story about a strong woman and her hard life.

University of Ghana, Legon, Bachelor of Arts, English BA, author of Affong’s Wishes, the newest children’s book set for the next academic year curriculum for the students in Ghana, beautiful dark skin, perfect hips, tiny waist, a good pair of perky tits, eyes that are absolutely beautiful, adorable, and innocent, they could make you do anything she wants, a voice that is so hypnotic it would make you go wild and submit to her, and a brain that is so sharp that it makes Mike Frimpong’s four-point zero grade point average at Yale seem less achievable.

One visit to her book launch leaves the playboy’s heart pumping and manhood twitching, not just from thinking of claiming her, but also making her the perfect woman to carry his child. Oops… she’s off limits and could cost him everything.

Is the playboy bold enough to chase her, risking everything he’s worked for in the process, or is he willing to let the one woman who stops his heartbeat for the first time walk out of his life?

My Review

Mike Frimpong, a successful, educated and handsome young Ghanaian, who can also be called as a womanizer, falls in love with young, educated and beautiful Lily Annah, who is an author  and a lecturer. Their story of finding true love is the basis of this wonderful book.

These are some key facts that I identified in this story;

  1. My favorite character in the story is Lily Annah, who is young and educated. Her character reminded me of Hermione Granger of Harry Potter, at certain situations.
  2. She is a humble young woman, and that can be called as her best quality.
  3. The aspect of Lily being a family person, her commitment, dedication towards her family is heart touching. This dedication leads her to become a surrogate mother, since she was in the verge of losing her family home.
  4. Mike being a successful man, is desperate to find a woman to carry his baby. He also being a womanizer, was not ready to settle down with one woman.
  5. Mike and Lily are two opposite characters. But, when you move to the latter part of the story, you see that these disparities are sorted and they are moving into common grounds.
  6. The way the love grows between Mike and Lily is wonderfully romantic.
  7. The story is rich in the Ghanaian culture. It spices up the story. We are quite familiar in reading books in the American or British setting. I felt that it is a new and exciting experience for the reader to be exposed to this new culture.
  8. The story, culture, characters and their qualities are well connected and keeps the reader interested until the very last page of the book.
  9. Interesting and wonderfully written by the author, loved her writing style and the plot.

Pretty much enjoyed everything about this book.

As Kismet Would Have It by Sandhya Menon – Book Review

Hello Booklovers!!!

On April 30th, the short story sequel to, When Dimple met Rishi was released. I have always enjoyed Sandhya Menon’s books immensely and therefore I got my own digital version copy. I finished the book yesterday and thought of writing a review today itself. So here it is;

dimple1.jpg

Synopsis

Will Dimple and Rishi find their happily ever after? Find out in this funny, romantic, endlessly charming e-novella sequel to the New York Times bestseller When Dimple Met Rishi!

Dimple Shah has a lot of opinions about marriage, but they boil down to this: It’s not for her. Sure, she loves her boyfriend, Rishi, but why does she need to validate that with an institution that has historically never favored the woman? Why go through all that hassle?

Rishi Patel deeply disagrees. He believes in the power that comes with combining love and tradition, and when the time comes, wants nothing more than to honor those things in a huge celebration with his friends and family. He knows Dimple loves him, but in hearing her rant about how marriage is a “construct of hegemonic masculinity” for the millionth time, a small, niggling part of him worries that it’s not the institution of marriage Dimple has a problem with; maybe it’s him.

The two lovebirds find themselves at a philosophical impasse. Can they find a way to work it out, or does kismet have other plans? (from Goodreads)

My Review

As I mentioned before, I am totally in love with Sandhya Menon’s books and her writing style. I have read all of her books which are totally romantic and cute. Her latest short story sequel to, When Dimple Met Rishi is what I am going to talk about today. As Kismet would Have It!!!!

I totally fell in love with this short read and it made me cry in the end. Oh, my emotions!!!! It was such a delightful addition to When Dimple Met Rishi. It is just a glimpse of the relationship between Dimple and Rishi, but it captures the whole idea of the previous book. The story discusses about the idea of marriage in different perspectives. How the tradition and culture has an impact in the decision of marriage, careers and traditional gender roles are discussed in the form of a cute love story. I pretty much enjoyed how this topic has been tackled by the author.

I was totally astonished by the way Dimple and Rishi tackled the situation. Perplexed with their thoughts and thinking pattern. This light read gives an amazing end to the story, and I enjoyed it very much!! Now I am totally excited to read There’s Something About Sweetie.

OMG!!! I would recommend this book to all of you!!! Grab the book and their world is all yours!!!
